Bombardier, a global leader in transportation and aerospace manufacturing, was founded in 1942 by Joseph-Armand Bombardier in Valcourt, Quebec. The company began as a small workshop where Bombardier invented the first snowmobile, the B7, to help people travel through Canada’s harsh winter conditions. This innovation laid the foundation for what would become Ski-Doo, one of the most iconic snowmobile brands in the world. Over the decades, Bombardier expanded its focus beyond recreational vehicles, venturing into public transportation and aerospace, becoming a symbol of Canadian engineering and innovation.
In the 1970s, Bombardier entered the rail transportation sector, manufacturing subway cars, commuter trains, and trams, and eventually becoming one of the world’s largest rail equipment manufacturers. The company also made significant strides in aerospace, producing business jets like the Learjet and Challenger series, as well as regional aircraft such as the CRJ (Canadair Regional Jet). Despite facing financial challenges in recent years, Bombardier restructured its operations, selling its rail division to Alstom in 2021 and focusing exclusively on business aviation. Today, Bombardier is a global leader in private jets, with its headquarters in Montreal, Quebec, and remains a proud example of Canadian ingenuity and industrial achievement.
Founded: Canada
Owned: Canada (publicly traded company)
Manufactured: Canada (with global production facilities in aerospace and transportation sectors) though they also have some manufacturing in Mexico as well.
“Bombardier is still manufactured in Canada. The company maintains significant manufacturing operations in Canada, particularly at its facilities in Montreal and Toronto.
Montreal Trudeau International Airport: This location serves as the headquarters for Bombardier Aviation and is involved in the final assembly and flight testing of Challenger aircraft, as well as interior completion for the Global family of jets1.
Saint-Laurent, Quebec: This site is a Product Development Centre and also manufactures cockpit and aft fuselage components1.
Toronto Pearson International Airport: This facility is a major hub for the final assembly of Bombardier’s Global business jets, including the Global 7500 and 6500 series. The site replaced the older Downsview facility and is considered one of the most advanced private jet manufacturing facilities in the world.
While Bombardier also has manufacturing facilities in the United States and Mexico, a significant portion of its production, particularly for its flagship Global jets, remains in Canada.”
